Todays's Fresh Catch: John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' on 45 RPM from Analogue Productions

08-20-2013 | By Jeff Day |

John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' on 45 RPM from Analogue Productions is another classic jazz album that you'll want to add to your music library.

John Coltrane A love Supreme

It's another of the top 25 Impulse albums that Analogue Productions selected to remaster on 45 RPM, is considered as one of the top jazz albums of all time, and it has won so many accolades over the years that it is hard to keep track of them: It's one of the Top 100 albums of all time for the US's National Public Radio (a particularly reliable judge of music), it's one of the National Museum of American History's "Treasures of American History" and is part of the collection of the Smithsonian Institution, it's on the list of the Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest albums, and on and on - it is an American national musical treasure.

Like Gil Evans' Out of the Cool, A Love Supreme was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and features superb production values and incredible music. A Love Supreme was recorded in 1964 after the Pulitzer Prize winning John Coltrane went through a Christian religious transformation a few years before his death in 1967.

A Love Supreme is overtly religious in nature, has a certain haunting spiritualism to the music, and the first track  with John Coltrane chanting 'A Love Supreme' gives the album an otherworldly quality. A true expression of spirituality from the soul of John Coltrane, A Love Supreme is great jazz by a great musician that died way too young (age 40). A Love Supreme was to John Coltrane what Pet Sounds was to the Beach Boys, a milestone in American music. A Love Supreme is a classic album that should be in very jazz collection. Highly recommend musically, sonically, and historically - an amazing jazz album!
