Today's Fresh Catch: The Sablon Audio Quantum Gran Corona Power Cord

05-25-2013 | By Jeff Day |

Mark Coles of Sablon Audio fame has developed a new power cord in his Corona product line: the Quantum Gran Corona.

QGC

Here's what Mark told me about the Quantum Gran Corona:

With the quantum power cord, I have thrown every tweak I know at the existing Gran Corona design to create an ultimate statement cord. The key changes are as follows:

- Oyaide platinum / beryllium AC plug

- an active quantum technology noise reduction circuit (that's the "quantum box" in the photo above)

- improved grounding

The level of improvement made by the adoption of the oyaide iec last summer, inspired me to revisit their plug sets which I last fully evaluated 3 years ago on a lower resolution cord design. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I now found the same platinum / beryllium design as the iec connector to give the best performance increase. Nice but what more could I do? The past year has seen me playing with the superlative Hypex n-core amplifiers which have revolutionised my system. They are supremely transparent and responsive to tweaking, which I have happily indulged myself in to great effect. Their switched mode power supplies loved a quantum aftermarket product so I sourced a suitably sized active quantum pcb to add to Gran Corona. Finally, I have also managed to implement a superior grounding solution which further isolates noise on the ground plane from the mains power.

All of these changes are worthwhile in their own right but build cumulatively upon the already high performing Gran Corona to give a superlative sound quality. The voicing is more neutral and should appeal equally to the ultra-fi community, who appreciate analytical qualities.

I am working on a review of the Quantum Gran Corona, the standard Gran Corona, and the Petit Corona right now, so I'll have a lot more to share in a little while.
