Today's Fresh Catch: Music on Vinyl

06-28-2015 | By Jeff Day |

I've gotten behind on calling out some of the good vinyl I've come across lately, so here's a couple recommendations for your consideration.

Gil Evans Great Jazz Standards

Gil Evans' Great Jazz Standards.

The first one I'd like to bring to your attention is the mono version of Gil Evans Great Jazz Standards from Pure Pleasure Records. It includes the songs, Davenport Blues, Straight No Chaser, Ballad of the Sad Young Men, Joy Spring,  on side one and Django, Chant of the Weed, and Theme on side two.

Gil Evans Great Jazz Standards 2

Gil Evans' Great Jazz Standards in glorious mono!

It's not quite at the same exalted level as the Masterpieces By Ellington as a mono record, but I thought it sounded pretty good with my Ortofon SPU Mono CG 25 Di MkII phono cartridge, and the music is awesome!

Gil Evans New Bottle Old Wine

Gil Evans' New Bottle Old Wine.

Here's another Gil Evans record for you from Pure Pleasure Records, this one in stereo: New Bottle Old Wine. This is another great sounding record of amazing jazz, this time played through my Ortofon SPU Classic GM MkII stereo phono cartridge. Songs include St Louis Blues, King Porter Stomp, Willow Tree, Struttin’ With Some Barbecue, Lester Leaps In, ‘Round Midnight, Manteca, and Bird Feathers.

Neil Young vol 5-8

Neil Young's Official Release Series Discs 5-8.

My final recommendation for today is Neil Young's Official Release Series Discs 5-8, which features the four albums Time Fades Away, On the Beach, Tonight's The Night, and Zuma. If you enjoy Neil Young's music you'll enjoy this box set. Remastered from the original master tapes by Bernie Grundman directly under the supervision of Neil Young. Very nicely done!

Ok, time to get back to listening to some music on this Sunday afternoon.

Thanks for stopping by!
