Today's Fresh Catch: Jazz Icons - Chet Baker Live in '64 & '79

03-11-2012 | By Jeff Day |

These Jazz Icons series of DVDs by Reelin’ In The Years Productions are treasures! I'm watching/listening to the Chet Baker Live in '64 & '79 ($18 USD at Amazon.com) as I write this and it is blowing me away!

You might notice that in the photo to the left that Chet is playing a flugelhorn instead of his usual trumpet. That's right, you get to see Chet play both trumpet and flugelhorn in these concerts - very, very, cool.

Right now I'm listening to the tone poem Five Years Ago by Wolgang Lackerschmid (vibraphone) in a duet with Chet Baker and it is unbelievable! The music is amazing and the sound quality is really wonderful. Lackerschmid is vibe GOD by the way, his playing is truly superb!

The accompanying booklet with the DVD is written by GRAMMY winning Rob Bowman, and it really captures a haunting image of Chet Baker, haunting enough that I decided I needed to read more about the life of Chet Baker, so I ordered Chet Baker: His Life and Music by Jeroen De Valk.

If you love the music of Chet Baker like I do you will not want to miss this one!
