Crossover Plinths
At this point, I was ready to build the final versions of the crossovers with the new pair of hard maple, edge-grain plinths that I had ordered from Hardwood Lumber Company. The top surface of the plinths, where the Duelund CAST components were to be mounted, I asked to be finished in a furniture-quality acrylic polyurethane finish (semi-gloss).
Hardwood Lumber Company's woodworkers are craftsmen from their local Amish community, who apply great care to the quality and detail of whatever they build, and I think it's kind of a cool vibe to add that touch of Old World Amish craftsmanship to the project. They also built the crossover plinths for the Duelund-Altec Project, and both those and this set of plinths for the Duelund-Corona 832A Project turned out beautifully.
When I laid out the dimensions for the plinths, the idea was that I would be able to slide them under the Corona loudspeakers so they would not be underfoot and be a tripping hazard, while still providing easy access to the attenuation adjustment rotary dial of the Luxman AS-10s, and of course I still wanted to be able to see those beautiful Duelund CAST copper inductors and capacitors that are the bedrock foundation for their exalted level of performance.
After I transferred over the components to the new plinths, I was quite pleased with how attractive they looked.
I added a pad of Soundcoat GPDS vibration damping material under each Luxman AS-10, partly to damp vibrations, but mostly to help keep the AS-10s in place on the crossover surface, as they are not secured to the surface like the Duelund CAST capacitors and inductors are with the setscrew lugs.
The Soundcoat GPDS has adhesive on one side, so all you have to do is cut it to size, peel off the backing, and then stick it onto the desired location. Neat stuff.
In case you haven’t heard of the Soundcoat Company, they have been providing specialized noise control solutions for aerospace, medical, and other applications since 1963. I’ve used the Soundcoat GPDS vibration damping sheets in several other projects, always with excellent results.
