Jesper Checking In!

06-12-2016 | By Jeff Day |

It's always a pleasure to meet a like minded music lover like Jesper, who loves music and is having fun putting cool hi-fi gear throughout his home.

Jesper has a nice mix of vintage and modern gear that fits right in with me and my pals here at Jeff's Place!

Jesper 1

Jesper told me:

"At the bottom you see my 15" Gold York's. I've owned these for approximately 3 years and they have changed my musical and hi-fi life. Serial numbers indicate they were manufactured in 1969 or 1970. Their frequency response measures extremely flat, and is matched very well too, which is not always the case with vintage Tannoys I gather. I bought them from BigEars Audio in Cornwall. I absolutely adore these speakers."

Jesper 2
"In the middle you see a pair of Tannoy 3LZ Gold's. They have consecutive serial numbers, which apparently is rare. Unfortunately one of the cones was damaged and repaired. I don't think it matters to the sound though. They sound good but not quite in the league of the big ones. I think i'll lend them to my Dad who likes to listen to Elvis on my system."

Jesper 3
"The Arenas on the top are going to hang in the bath room."

"Electronics. I should sort out all the wires one day."

Jesper 4
"I use a Leben phono stage, an Icon Audio preamp, and a Radford STA-25. I believe in original valves and one day I should get rid of the valves I have in the Icon and put in some originals."

Jesper 5
"The step-up trafos are by Partridge, Ikeda, and Silk Audio. The Luxman switch box is for switching between the turntables."

Jesper 6
"I have a Copland hybrid that I use when I mess around with different speakers, and a Copland CD player and Hugo DAC for digital. Most of the cables are from Supra."

Jesper 7

Jesper 8

"A little system for the bedroom, and playing Barry White, with a Goodmans Maxim with Alnico magnets from the 1960s, and driven by a Cyrus amp and a Lenco B55."

Jesper 9

"Shortly after I got the York's I bought a Lenco L75 for nothing, and since then my diet has been almost exclusively analog."

Jesper 10

"I have Garrard 301 grease bearing with Bokrand arm & SPU, plinthed in cherry wood by Layers of Beauty in England, and he also did the shelves for me."

"My Lenco L75 is also plinthed by Layers of Beauty. The material is ordinary ply, but pimped with extensive damping under the top plate, a new bearing from Lencomotion Audio, along with a Miyabi cartridge and a Jelco arm."

Jesper 11

"I've got an Lenco L70 that's close to original, and it's mounted with a Denon 103. The arm has no counterweight and is balanced by springs. Effectively this means that the sweet spot is where the pickup sits. Think of the arm as a hammer or a golf club. This means that the pickup stays in the groove even if you hit the plinth quite hard. There's a guy that demos it on YouTube. I think the L70 arm is an overlooked gem. I have the habit of switching turntables according to what type  of music I'm playing. The Garrard for jazz, and either the L75 or the L70 for pop and rock. Poorer recordings go on the L70."

Jesper 12

"Westminster's are an unusual speaker to use in the kitchen. The kitchen and dinning area is approximately 80 sqm, and the ceiling height 3.5 m. My other Tannoys have worked well in this position, and I'm quite sure the West's also will."

Jesper 13
"Maybe not audiophile-style but I actually often prefer to listen away from the sweet spot."

Jesper 14
"The Westies' I bought used from Emotion Audio in Scotland. I traded in quite a bit of stuff. I suspect they'd been sitting with these (with very little use) for quite a while. They didn't sound righteous when they arrived Friday evening, but after a good kicking Saturday they started to open up. They sound pretty awesome now, but i suspect they'll open up even more."

Many thanks to Jesper for sharing his love for music & hi-fi with us! You have a beautiful collection of vintage and contemporary gear, Jesper, and it looks like you're having fun with it. I really your mix of contemporary and vintage gear, it's the very sort of thing a like a lot, and you'd fit right in with me and my pals here at Jeff's Place!

Thanks for stopping by, and may the tone be with you!
