A Little Jazz - 20 Favorites

02-20-2011 | By Jeff Day |

A couple of weeks ago, while getting ready for a bicycle ride, I injured my lower back quite severely and so have been out of action, first flat on my back for almost a week, then followed by a week of physical therapy (with three more weeks to come), but now I'm starting to feel a little better so I thought I'd get back at the keyboard and make a post about music.

A few of you asked me to make a post about 20 of my favorite jazz albums, so I thought I'd go ahead and do that. It's actually kind of a hard post to do, because there's a lot of jazz I really like, and narrowing it down to my 20 favorites is nearly impossible. So what I thought is instead I'd post the first 20 of my favorites that come to mind, and ask you to do the same, so we can get a nice list of music going.

So here's a list of 20 of my favorite jazz albums, in no particular order, and I'll look forward to hearing about your favorites:

  1. Ballads by the John Coltrane Quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones, Impulse Records, 1962.
  2. Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, Fantasy Records, 1962.
  3. Feeling Free by Barney Kessel, Contemporary, 1969.
  4. Blues for a Gypsy by Frank Vignola, Acoustic Disc, 2001.
  5. What is there to say: Joe Pass solo guitar by Joe Pass, Pablo, 2001.
  6. Someday My Prince Will Come by Miles Davis Sextet, Columbia Records, 1963.
  7. Someday My Prince Will Come by Chet Baker Trio, Steeplechase, 1983.
  8. Go by Dexter Gordon, Blue Note, 1963.
  9. Midnight Blue by Kenny Burrell, Blue Note, 1963.
  10. Live at the LOA - Summer Wind by the Ray Brown Trio, Concord, 1988.
  11. Everybody Digs Bill Evans by Bill Evans, Riverside, 1959.
  12. Brilliant Corners by Thelonius Monk, Riverside, 1956.
  13. Very Tall by the Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson, Verve, 1962.
  14. The Soulful Moods of Gene Ammons by Gene Ammons, Moodsville, 1962.
  15. Jazz Party by Duke Ellington, Columbia Records, 1959.
  16. The Great Prestige Recordings by the Miles Davis Quintet, Analogue Productions.
  17. Getz / Gilberto by Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto, Verve, 1963.
  18. Time Out by Dave Brubeck Quartet, Columbia, 1959.
  19. Ellington Indigos by Duke Ellington, Columbia, 1958.
  20. Cafe by Trio Da Paz, Malandro Records, 2002.

There's so many more favorites I could have listed, but at least this is a good start for those wanting to check into a little jazz. Enjoy!
