Godspeed Ed Sheftel

02-13-2014 | By Jeff Day |

I am sorry to report that I was just informed by Bob Reite that trumpeter extraordinaire, Ed Sheftel, passed away on Tuesday. Many of you will recognize Ed's name from the 6Moons articles I wrote back when Ed introduced the work of Tom Evans to US music enthusiasts.

Ed had just recently told me how excited he was by the work of Bob Reite and how he wanted me to hear it for myself, which I still hope to do at some point in the future.

From Bob's website: "Ed graduated cum laude from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and then went on to receive a Master of Music from Yale University. He was the lead trumpet in the original production of the iconic musical Hair for the entire two year run at the Aquarius Theatre in Los Angeles California. Ed then played lead trumpet in Tommy, the rock opera by The Who, followed by Jesus Christ, Superstar which opened the Universal Amphitheater. Ed also enjoyed a long career in the Los Angeles area as a studio trumpet player in television, movies and recordings."

Ed is survived by his wife Nancy and his daughter Monica. This is very sad news, and Nancy, Monica, and Bob, are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
