Frederik Carøe Checking in from Denmark - Duelund Components for Westminster Royal SE Crossover Project Are On The Way!

04-12-2013 | By Jeff Day |

I just heard from Frederik Carøe - the founder of Duelund Coherent Audio - that the exotic perfectionist Duelund Coherent Audio components for the Westminster Royal SE Crossover Project are on the way to Jeff's Place from Denmark!  Below is a teaser photo Frederik sent from the start of parts production.

Duelund

Not since the days of The Garrard Project (1, 2, 3) have I seen so much interest expressed by all of you in a Hi-Fi project. As part of this project I'll be going through the full history of Duelund Coherent Audio and their remarkable products, taking a detailed look at each of the components used in the project, providing blog posts documenting every step along the way, and culminating in a full reference-quality article (or articles if there is too much content for one article) for Positive Feedback Online. Expect lots of photos as well.

Westminster Royal

As we get started I want to thank everyone involved in this international effort for making The Project possible:

  • Charalambos Ioannou (Pambos) in Cyprus for getting everyone excited about crossover upgrades for the Tannoy Westminster Royal SE through his own upgrade projects and those of his customers (Note: while we'll be using my Westminster Royal SEs as the test-bed for The Project, these upgrades will also broadly apply to other loudspeakers as well, so you can join in the fun even if you don't have a pair of Westminster Royal SEs).
  • Mark Coles of Sablon Audio in London, England, for putting me in touch with Frederik Carøe the founder of Duelund Coherent Audio, and for providing wise technical advice related to the crossover upgrades.
  • Dr. Paul Mills, Director of Research & Engineering at Tannoy, in Scotland, who designed the Westminster Royal SE, has been fielding our technical questions and providing advice on how to proceed with the upgrades in the most effective way (and more importantly, what not to do!).
  • The beloved Pacific Northwest audio legend, Pete Riggle, of Pete Riggle Audio Engineering in Washington State in the USA, who will be providing all of the on-the-ground hands-on technical expertise to implement the new crossover. (I wouldn't be surprised if all around cool guy and 6Moons reviewer Stephaen Harrell also joined in on the fun - in fact I'm counting on it!)
  • To Frederik Carøe in Denmark - the founder of Duelund Coherent Audio - who made the project possible by providing the beyond state-of-art Duelund components for The Project, I want to say a particularly big thank you! We couldn't have done the project without your help - thank you!
  • I guess I'd better add myself to the list as well. Yours truly, Jeff Day: I'm using my beloved Westminster Royal SEs for The Project, which is a big scary step for me! I've never taken on anything quite this ambitious, and without Pambos' encouragement, Mark Coles', Dr. Paul Mills', Pete Riggle's, and Frederik Carøe's help and assistance, I would never have dreamed of opening up the big Westminster Royal SEs for modifications!

So let the journey begin! Much more to come!

Postscript:

Just after the post went live, Pambos sent me a couple of photos of the outboard crossover of one of his customers that they just finished installing some new Duelund inductors in. Pambos has a set of Duelund inductors for his Westminsters too, but hasn't yet had the time to get them installed.

Frank Rodgers just sent me a note on seeing this post, and he has ordered a set of Duelund components to do the crossovers on his Westminster Royal SEs as well, so we're off to an exciting start! Frank has promised to share his experiences and photos as we go too, so this should be a lot of fun!

Can you tell I'm excited!

Be sure to send photos and details about your own upgrade projects, I look forward to hearing about your own adventures!

Postscript # 2: Pambos just sent me some more photos I thought everyone would like to see. The photo below shows all the components for one of Pambos' outboard crossover in the process of being laid out. The goal was to find the best way to lay out the components in preparation for making the wooden boxes that will house the crossover.

Pambos also included some more photos of Theodoros' outboard crossover.
