The Analogue Productions 45 RPM Bill Evans Riverside Box Set

06-19-2010 | By Jeff Day |

It is my opinion that the finest records in the history of the world are being made right now by Analogue Productions as part of their 45 RPM series. The records have both superb musicality and superb sonics, and include some of the most important recordings ever laid down on tape, at least for us jazz fans that is.

I have had my eye on the Bill Evans 45 RPM Riverside Box Set for a while now, as Bill Evans is one of my favorite jazz musicians. The box set is pricey at $600 USD though, so it took me a while to put aside the money for it. I didn't want to dally too long, because there's only 1500 numbered copies being offered, and history has shown me that once Analogue Productions sells out of something the prices go through the roof, which would put it permanently out of reach for me.

I ordered the box set, and the day it was due to be delivered I left the office early for the day, as I couldn't hardly wait to give it a listen. After unboxing I laid out the contents to check them out, and was really quite impressed. First of all, the box that contains all the LPs is nicely done, and includes a nice glossy booklet describing the contents (show in the promo photo, top left).

The box set includes the LPs New Jazz Conceptions, Everybody Digs Bill Evans, Portrait In Jazz, Explorations, Sunday At The Village Vanguard, Waltz For Debby, Moonbeams, Know What I Mean?, Interplay, How My Heart Sings! and At Shelly's Manne-Hole. That's 22 records making up 11 titles.

I haven't listened to all of the titles yet, but the ones I have listened to are absolutely superb. If you enjoy Bill Evans' music, I think you'll be very impressed with this box set. I give it my highest recommendation!
