Today's Fresh Catch is the Bill Evans Trio's The Oslo Concerts DVD. After Jonathan posted recommending this performance I ordered the DVD from Amazon.com for $15.49 USD.
After the DVD arrived I played it in my Music Lovers system: Harbeth Super HL5 loudspeakers (sitting on Skylan stands), Leben CS-600 integrated valve amplifier (using KT90 tubes at the moment), an Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player, and a Phillips 42-inch Philips 1080P LCD television. All accessories and cables are by Acoustic Revive.
I love my Music Lovers system, and for good reason - it always gets the music right! The Bill Evans Trio's The Oslo Concerts DVD is no exception and I was treated to some delightful jazz concerts by the Bill Evans Trio in Oslo.
The first performance was at the Oslo Munch Museum in October of 1966 and was produced by the Norwegian Broadcasting Company. The video is full screen (rather than wide screen) and in Black & White. Personally, I think it's pretty cool, it's like a time machine experience seeing Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez (bass), and Alex Riel (drums) playing jazz dressed up in sport coats and ties in front of an audience seated in fold-up metal chairs. The video quality is nothing to write home about, but the music is, and the sonics are really quite nice on this DVD as well. I love it!
The second performance was at the Molde Jazz Festival in August of 1980, and it too was produced by the Norwegian Broadcasting Company. Like the Munch Museum concert, this one is also in full screen format, but this time in color. This time it's Bill Evans, Marc Johnson (bass), and Joe La Barbera (drums) making beautiful music.
If you love the music of Bill Evans you have to get this DVD! The Amazon web site says these two performances have never been offered publicly before, and I'm guessing that this DVD will not be available for long, so if you want it you better buy it or plan on being disappointed when it becomes unavailable.
Many thanks to Jonathan for making me aware of this DVD!
