Don Garber, an American Master, 1935-2017.

06-09-2017 | By Jeff Day |

I have some sad news to report.

Nara, Don Garber's daughter, contacted me yesterday to tell me that her father passed away unexpectedly at his home in Brooklyn on Sunday.

Many of you know Don through his many contributions to the North American hi-fi culture, and for his hand crafted Fi audio electronics.

The world will be a less beautiful place without Don Garber in it, and I would like to offer my condolences to Don's daughter, Nara Garber, and to his two sons, Graham Garber and Pier Gugliotta, for their loss, and I hope you may find some comfort in this difficult time.

Here's the note from Nara:

A note to those who knew my father, Don Garber:

I apologize for contacting you in this way. My father died unexpectedly at his home in Brooklyn this past Sunday, and my brothers and I are in the process of trying to make sense of how he had things organized. I'm certain that many people have fallen through the cracks and that some of you deserve more personal notes, but I wanted to reach out to everyone on the first contact list I was able to locate to let people know of his passing. Some of you may have known him from the art world, others from Fi and his work with vacuum tube amps, and others might be old friends I never had the pleasure of meeting or whose email addresses aren't readily intelligible to me. I apologize for lumping you all together in this way.

My father was a fantastic parent to me and my brother Graham and also our older half brother, Pier, who was six years old when my father married our mother, but whom Don loved like his own son. Since I lived just down the street, it falls primarily to me to sort through Don's correspondence and business dealings and put things in order. If any of you have questions of a personal or professional nature, please feel free to direct them to me at this address. I will do my best to follow up in a timely fashion.

We would also love to hear any stories anyone is inclined to share. Our grief has already been sprinkled with a remarkable number of heartwarming and often hilarious anecdotes from friends who knew him from incredibly varied chapters of his life.

Instead of having a service right away, we are planning a celebration in Don's memory for early fall -- September at the earliest and possibly October -- hopefully including an exhibition of his paintings. If you would like to be notified as details fall into place, please let me know. If you would prefer not to be contacted again, you can convey that to me as well.

Thank you for reading, and hug your loved ones close.

Nara Garber (on behalf of Graham Garber and Pier Gugliotta)

Please join me in today in remembering Don Garber, and offering condolences to Nara, Graham, and Pier.

Photo of Don Garber with family from his daughter, Nara. Nara said of the photo, "This one is of my parents and me and my younger brother Graham from about 1975."

I will be following up in the near future to share some of my memories of Don, and to tell you some of the stories Don shared with me over the years. Godspeed my friend!
