Today's Fresh Catch: The OPPO UDP-203 Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Player

02-17-2017 | By Jeff Day |

While I was working on the review of the Lefson resistors, the elderly OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray player that I was using for my reference digital source in my A5 Voice of the Theatre system quit working.

I disassembled the BDP-83 and determined that the transport, which had been acting up for quite a while, finally died.

The BDP-83 exhibited really nice audio quality in my A5 Voice of the Theatre system, with a relaxed musical presentation that was full of rich tone and compelling musicality, so I was sorry that its fate had finally consumed it.

I went out to the OPPO website to see what OPPO's offerings were these days, and I came across the new OPPO UDP-203 Blu-ray player.

After reading through the website description, the UDP-203, priced at $549 USD, seemed like a good buy, so I clicked on the 'Buy Now' button, selected the cheapest shipping method, and ordered one.

The UDP-203 arrived a mere three days later by FedEx!

As I unpacked the UDP-203 I was impressed with the quality of the packaging, which was at least the equal of many high end products.

The OPPO UDP-203 was wrapped in a nice carry bag, that you could conveniently use to carry your UDP-203 to other locations ...

... or alternatively, you could fit up to three growlers in it for filling upon your next stop at your favorite craft brewery! Cool!

The UDP-203 has typical OPPO build quality, being functional but not fancy.

Inside the box was a remote, batteries, power cord, and HDMI interconnect.

I used Mark Coles' superb Sablon Audio Gran Corona power cord on the UDP-203, and for interconnects I used the equally superb Duelund DCA16GA interconnects terminated with the Duelund gold RCA plugs that Chris at Parts ConneXion made up for me.

I'm not going to be formally reviewing the OPPO UDP-203, but I'll let you know my impressions of it as I get a feel of it over time.

I can say that the video quality was very impressive even on my aging non-4K Phillips TV. I haven't quite got the full measure of the UDP-203's sonic & musical prowess yet, but based on first impressions it seems decent, and I'll have more to say about it as it continues to run-in.

As always, thanks for stopping by, and may the tone be with you!
