Today's Fresh Catch: The new Duelund 'Dual' DCA12GA tinned-copper wire speaker cables!

07-12-2020 | By Jeff Day |

I really have to hand it to Frederick Carøe at Duelund Coherent Audio in Denmark, he has truly revolutionized the production of tinned-copper wire that is specifically designed for high-performance audio applications.

Today's Fresh Catch: The new Duelund Dual DCA12GA tinned-copper wire.

Frederik has produced tinned-copper wires for audio applications in three different styles.

The first style of Duelund tinned-copper conductors are wrapped in an oil-soaked and baked cotton dielectric for use in signal transmission duties for interconnects, speaker cables, headshell leads, and crossover wiring, for example (DCA12GA, DCA16GA, DCA20GA, and DCA26GA), which are all applications I have tried and can recommend.

The second style of Duelund tinned-copper conductors Duelund offers is encased in a PolyCAST dielectric - similar to the CAST material used in Duelund CAST components - that is rated for 600V for use in power cables, point-to-point wiring in amplification electronics, or any application that requires a higher voltage rating, which is available in 600V DCA20GA, 600V DCA16GA, and 600V DCA12GA versions.

I should mention that I've also had success with 600V DCA tinned-copper wires in lower voltage applications, where its PolyCAST casing offers a slightly mellower presentation that reminds me of the vintage Western Electric tinned-copper wires, with their inner poly dielectric sheath and fabric outer covering. Even if you don't need a 600V rating for your particular application, its nice to have a little 600V DCA tinned-copper wire around so you have the option of a slightly different sound for voicing purposes.

The third style of Duelund tinned-copper conductors is the new product line of 'Dual' tinned-copper cables, where two of the regular oil-soaked and baked cotton dielectric tinned-copper wires are wrapped in an additional outer oil-soaked and baked cotton casing, making it particularly nice for making interconnects with a tidy appearance.

The first Duelund Dual tinned-copper cables were the Dual DCA16GA. Frederik sent me a pair of interconnects constructed of Dual DCA16GA tinned-copper wire terminated with the new Duelund plastic-free RCAs, and they quickly became my favorite line-level interconnects in my Duelund-Altec Project "Stokowski" Altec loudspeakers based system.

Now - and the subject of this 'Today's Fresh Catch' - is the arrival of the new Duelund Dual DCA12GA that has two Duelund DCA12GA tinned-copper cables in baked oil-soaked cotton dielectric enclosed in a single outer sheath of oil-soaked and baked cotton dielectric to keep things tidy in speaker cable applications.

As you know, I am quite fond of tinned-copper wires for audio applications because of their "real sound" presentation of music, with its unique live-like qualities in terms of natural tonality, vivid presence, dynamic prowess, and just generally superb overall musicality.

Tinned-copper wiring was used in vintage audio and electric guitar electronics applications, and is partially responsible for the superb sound quality of those vintage electronics and electric guitars.

I am so glad that Frederik has brought tinned-copper wire back to the audio mainstream so that more people can enjoy its charms.

The Duelund tinned-copper wires are also very affordable, so you don't have to break the bank to have world-class high-performance wiring in your system.

The new Duelund Dual DCA12GA tinned-copper wire is available right now from Parts Connexion (HERE).

Parts Connexion is the exclusive vendor for the new Duelund Dual DCA12GA tinned-copper wire for the next 3 months, until production ramps up enough to provide it to other vendors. Pricing is an affordable $31.95 USD per meter.

I'll be trying the new Duelund Dual DCA12GA tinned-copper wire as speaker cables on my 'Stokowski' Altec loudspeakers, and will be reporting back my impressions of its performance.

Stay tuned for more!

As always, thanks for stopping by, and may the tone be with you!
